MILWAUKEE (May 16, 2018) – Wisconsin-based Cousins Subs® and its Make It Better Foundation award four Wisconsin high school seniors with $20,000 in scholarships as part of its sixth annual Wisconsin Sports Awards Scholarship Contest.

Adam McAvoy of Oshkosh and Stephanie Peitersen of Oconto Falls are the first-place prize winners, each receiving a $7,500 scholarship. Runner-ups, Brian Wiedenfeld of Sussex and Sofia Scekic of Racine are recipients of a $2,500 scholarship to assist with their continued education.

Cousins announced the scholarship finalists during surprise visits at their high schools, where the Cousins’ team shared the news in front of the recipients’ classmates, family members and school staff. All four finalists are to be recognized at the Wisconsin Sports Awards event, which is to be held in Milwaukee on August 22, 2018. At the event, the finalists will walk the blue carpet beside Wisconsin’s finest athletes in high school, collegiate and professional arenas, receive recognition onstage during the award presentation and mingle with surrounding athletes – many of which are deemed idols!

“By continuing to team up with Good Karma Brands, we’re able to support student-athletes in their journey to reach their academic and athletic goals,” said Justin McCoy, vice president of marketing at Cousins Subs and director on the Make It Better Foundation board. “The Wisconsin Sports Awards serves as the perfect avenue to recognize these four finalists for their excellence in academics, athletics and community involvement in front of Wisconsin’s finest athletes.”

The Make It Better Foundation received nearly 500 applications from Wisconsin high school senior athletes. The four finalists were selected due to their academic acumen, participation in Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association-sanctioned sports, community involvement, and their pursuit of continuing education. Over the years, Cousins Subs and its Make It Better Foundation has awarded $100,000 in scholarships to 24 high school student-athletes throughout Wisconsin.

“The process of narrowing down applicants was no easy feat as each candidate stood out in their own unique way,” said McCoy. “We’re honored to recognize this elite group of students as they continue their journey of academic and athletic success.”

The scholarships are funded through Cousins’ Make It Better Foundation—a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to funding three areas vital to any community: health and wellness, hunger and youth education.
